Elegant tea table
If, like the rest of us, you’ve vowed to be a bit more like the Dowager Countess this year (Downton Abbey, anyone?), you might start by hosting a formal afternoon tea service for your friends. First step? Invest in an elegant tea table. Popularized in the 18th century, it was a fixture of upper-class sitting rooms, tucked to one side and brought to the centre for elaborate tea service displays. Celebrated for their interesting sight levels (they stand about 10 inches taller than standard side tables) and elegant detailing, these unique pieces are a nod to another century and a tribute to our favourite PBS period drama. Sigh, if only we had our own staff to serve the tea itself. Hickory Chair, $1,875.
Venetian mirrors
It’s like an adaptable piece of art – a blank canvas that picks up the colour palette of any room it’s in. Mirrors are a decorator’s favourite tool to bounce light and visually expand a small space, but Venetian mirrors, known for their mirrored-glass frame, intricate etching and ornate edging, add an old world element and a dose of European flair. Putti Fine Furnishings, 416-972-7652, $2,495.
Bold blue paint
Stylist Andrea McCrindle originally swathed the sitting room in pale colours to achieve a romantic, elegant look. To introduce interest, she layered soft patterns and rich textures for a demure charm. But Andrea didn’t stop there; she amped up the visual appeal with a bold blast of on-trend turquoise for the second take of the room. It’s something modern and unexpected in a mostly traditional space, and it counters the flirty femininity of the rest of the room. What do you think? Is a hit of the blue lagoon calling out to you, too? Paint tired candlesticks or a hand-me-down side table in one of these big blues paint colours.

Neutral graphic wallpaper
Introduce visual interest to your pale palette with a bold graphic in neutral tones. The oversized geometric pattern makes a statement, while the subtle colours prevent it from screaming for attention. Curvy, swirling lines keep the nuance natural and feminine.
