DIY project: Free-standing kitchen island
Transform an IKEA table base into a stylish free-standing island.
Follow these step-by-step instructions to create your own free-standing island like the one featured in our Parisian-style kitchen. This budget-friendly accessory can be customized to suit your style while adding an extra prep area to any size space.

Directions
1 Assemble IKEA’s Karpalund base without screwing on the foot caps.
2 Create a slatted shelf by cutting pine boards to size and spray-painting them black.
3 Screw four rubber casters (we spray-painted the metal parts gold) to each corner of the shelf.
4 Attach the table base onto the shelf by screwing through the wood into the foot cap holes.
5 Adhere a custom-made cultured marble top to the table base.
6 Create a towel bar on the side of the table by attaching a small drapery rod using cup hooks.
