Interior: Decorating with pattern

Decorating with pattern Natalie Hodgins wasn't trying to make a point by painting the living room pink in the three-storey Victorian row house she shares with her husband and her two young children. "It was one of those happy accidents," says the enthusiastic senior designer at Sarah Richardson Design. Besides, she adds, she felt she owed it to her clients. "If I'm going to push them to use colour, I should do it myself."

Living room Though the room is only about 120 sq. ft., it has space-enhancing 10' high ceilings. Natalie maxed out on seating, choosing neutral fabrics with colourful accents that are easy and inexpensive to change. decorating-pattern-vignette550.jpg
Vibrant colour combination "I love pink and orange, so I tried them together," says Natalie. The trick is to find the right combo. Crystal buttons on cushions, silver candleholders and glass vases add interest and sparkle. "It's like putting on earrings with an outfit," she says. decorating-pattern-dining-room.jpg
Dining room Space-saving mid-century modern floating shelves (which once hung above Natalie's father-in-law's office desk) are perfect for displaying treasured china and silverware. Silver and glass elements echo the shimmery wallpaper. "Accessories are a great way to incorporate colour without making a huge commitment," says Natalie. decorating-pattern-bedroom.jpg
Master bedroom A harmonious medley of pattern makes the bed a strong focal point. The artwork - a gift from Natalie's workmates - inspired the green accent wall behind the bed. Glassware and other accessories are great sources of colour and simple ways to reinforce the room's palette.
