Small space: Treetop modern
Unique collections and mid-century modern furnishings set this cozy Vancouver home apart.
When homeowner Tamar Rosenberg opens a window, she can all but touch the leaves that rustle on the cherry tree branches outside. But even when the windows are closed, a witty version of nature flourishes inside this mod Vancouver dwelling. Woodsy wallpaper and a quirky menagerie of animal themed art and display pieces play to the outdoors. And there’s a warm feeling thanks to the wooden Mid-Century Modern pieces, which are placed throughout the space. Think that’s all? Think again. Overhead are skylights to watch the weather, a feature that Tamar loves equally on both sunny and rainy days.

The perfect Vancouver home
The woodsy wallpaper was a bit of a splurge, but well worth it as it acts as a starting point for the nature-inspired decor seen throughout this Vancouver apartment. An inexpensive IKEA table looks great with vintage white bucket chairs purchased from a movie prop house. The seat cushions were made from old woollen army blankets. The trophy and matte black vase punctuate the mostly white scheme.

A touch of nature
Hens-and-chicks sprout from a vintage yellow planter, adding a vibrant touch to the space.

Beautiful bookcase
Teak has a warmth and simplicity that’s attractive to Tamar. In bookcase form, it provides vertical interest and plenty of storage, and its colour-coded contents transform it into a style statement. On top, the collection of glass vases is full of thrift store finds.

Hidden storage
A teak dresser provides hidden storage in the living room. Grouping red objects together unites this amusing collection.

Displaying records
To choose objects and furnishings for her home, Tamar relies on her appreciation for clean lines and one-of-a-kind items. Thrift shops, vintage stores and things made by friends are her go-to sources. “The key to good design is to understand why a piece that you love is lovable,” she says. “Don’t just think with your head – pay attention to your heart.”
This inexpensive bookshelf is the perfect place to house Tamar's collection of LP's and it adds to the overall vintage-inspired allure of the space.

An inspiring office
Tamar’s studio is also her office, so she wanted it to inspire. A large surface area leaves plenty of room to work.

A cozy bedroom
“I love my bedroom,” says Tamar. “It’s almost too cozy, though. I don’t want to leave it in the morning!” In keeping with the nature theme, there’s a sculpted dogwood branch hanging above the bed. It’s paired with a winged heart Tamar picked up in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Purple and grey bed linens are restful and tranquil, while still adding a hit of colour to the space.

A little whimsy
By grouping cream bottles, jars and bowls with a fun papier mâché clown and blue owl, Tamar created a playful display that’s anything but boring.
