In fashion, trends come and go in a single season, but decor trends tend to have a longer life. I treat fashion like I treat interiors: an item should be enduring and still relevant ten years after you buy it. \n<strong>4 What\u2019s your favourite room in your house? <\/strong>My favourite room is the bathroom. I try to keep them organized in folders and flip through them regularly. \n<strong>7 Tell us a bit about your creative process.<\/strong> I work almost exclusively with watercolour paints and paper. This is the most natural way for me to work and I love being able to work with the colours directly. I never got used to drawing on the computer, but I do use it for touch-ups. &nbsp; [caption id=&quot;attachment_11985&quot; align=&quot;aligncenter&quot; width=&quot;450&quot; caption=&quot;Virginia's watercolours.&quot;] \n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.styleathome.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/12\/15-questions-with-toronto-textile-guru-virginia-johnson\/paints-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11985\"><img class=\"size-large wp-image-11985\" src=\"http:\/\/storage.quebecormedia.com\/v1\/sah_prod\/style_at_home\/b5655af2-025b-4a7e-bf8f-9b70348017cd\/paints-e1331573861349-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a>[\/caption] \n<strong> 8 How did your collaboration with Anthro come about?<\/strong> We had discussed a collaboration for several years, but it seemed like the timing was right to do shawls with my illustrations on them and bring the collection to a wider market.&nbsp; It has been a very fun collaboration as our aesthetics are complimentary. \n<strong>9 Tell us about the most recent collection. <\/strong>Our second collection hit the stores in February, and the theme is the Bloomsbury Group.&nbsp; I did three different shawls based on this theme, featuring a woodcut, a drawing room, and a flowering hydrangea.&nbsp; All have powdery colours like blush and pale blue mixed with black. &nbsp; \n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.styleathome.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/12\/15-questions-with-toronto-textile-guru-virginia-johnson\/woodcut_high\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11986\"><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11986\" src=\"http:\/\/storage.quebecormedia.com\/v1\/sah_prod\/style_at_home\/4b0e610d-25af-4c07-a659-66a705108e11\/woodcut_high-1024x449.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a> [caption id=&quot;attachment_11987&quot; align=&quot;aligncenter&quot; width=&quot;450&quot; caption=&quot;Drawing Room scarf for Anthropologie.&quot;] \n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.styleathome.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/12\/15-questions-with-toronto-textile-guru-virginia-johnson\/drawingroom_high\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11987\"><img class=\"size-large wp-image-11987\" src=\"http:\/\/storage.quebecormedia.com\/v1\/sah_prod\/style_at_home\/9e3d696c-51cf-487f-8414-2a82e8119f3e\/drawingroom_high-1024x449.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a>[\/caption] \n<strong>10 Do you have a favourite piece from the collection?<\/strong> Personally I love the drawing room because it really evokes the Bloomsbury spirit. \n<strong>11 How does this relate to what you\u2019ve done for Anthro in the past?<\/strong> The themes tend to be print-focused and feminine and whimsical.&nbsp; They usually reflect a time period or movement or place. \n<strong>12 Tell us a little about how you started working with Kate Spade.<\/strong> It came about accidentally. I was interviewing for a job as an accessories designer and happened to bring along my illustration portfolio. Andy Spade asked if I would illustrate some invitations for them, which turned into illustrating their stationary program, after that, their etiquette books. There's so much energy that is created when you partner up with someone else. I am flooded with ideas that are generated from working with other like-minded people, and I can\u2019t wait to get to work. \n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.styleathome.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/12\/15-questions-with-toronto-textile-guru-virginia-johnson\/girl-on-grass\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11989\"><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11989\" src=\"http:\/\/storage.quebecormedia.com\/v1\/sah_prod\/style_at_home\/b819b4a3-7ed2-47e6-96bf-3c60cb3c49eb\/girl-on-grass-675x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"682\" \/><\/a> \n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.styleathome.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/12\/15-questions-with-toronto-textile-guru-virginia-johnson\/poppies\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11990\"><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11990\" src=\"http:\/\/storage.quebecormedia.com\/v1\/sah_prod\/style_at_home\/a85cadb9-903d-4f8f-8574-ed760bcb13ed\/poppies-716x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"643\" \/><\/a> \n<strong>13 What are the golden rules of using multiple patterns in either a room or an outfit?<\/strong> I think unifying by colour is the easiest and looks the most beautiful.&nbsp; This doesn\u2019t mean necessarily the same colour, but colours which are in the same family.&nbsp; I also think it\u2019s more interesting to vary the scale, density and rhythm.&nbsp; For example if you use a large floral on a sofa, it can be very grounding to use something more linear or geometric on the carpet. \n<strong>14 In using colour, where should you take risks and where do you stay safe?<\/strong> It's technically safer to use neutrals on larger pieces of furniture and add colour and pattern in accent pieces, like throw pillows and lamps.
