A stunning five-bedroom semi-detached home across the street from a beautiful park was for rent. Through the miracle of video calling, Sarah was instantly able to see the house\u2019s potential. What immediately struck her was the character. All the original architectural details \u2014 substantial mouldings, soaring ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace \u2014 were still intact. But the space was tired, rickety and needed some work. And despite it being a rental, Sarah was so smitten with the house\u2019s stunning bones, she knew she could give this 100-year-old gem the love it deserved.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe first order of business was painting the orange and blue walls a crisp shade of white. Keeping the small room simple, Sarah incorporated flat-panel cabinetry, durable engineered quartz countertops, slate flooring and affordable stainless steel appliances. Tweaking the house also included polishing the original hardwood floors, incorporating more storage and installing new modern light fixtures.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EGiving their space a warm and personal touch included surrounding themselves with meaningful objects. when.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EBuilt in 1929, the home was architecturally stunning and teeming with potential, but renovations over the years had left it \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.styleathome.com\/interiors\/small-spaces\/article\/a-once-dark-and-dated-condo-is-revamped-to-reflect-its-owners-passion-for-art-and-travel\u0022\u003Edark, dowdy and So after renting it out for a year and a half, the couple decided to spruce it up before moving in. This meant imbuing its traditional envelope with the contemporary aesthetic they love. \u201cWe were inspired by London, where beautiful old buildings are updated with modern elements to amazing effect,\u201d says the owner.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThey enlisted Ryan Martin and Amy Kent of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cromadesign.com\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECroma Design\u003C\/a\u003E in 2013 \u2013 at first collaborating via late-night phone calls from across the pond \u2013 to strike the perfect juxtaposition of old and new in a space suitable for their busy young family. Top priorities included brightening the interior, enhancing flow and making it feel more connected to the exterior.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EKey to effecting the desired changes was putting on an addition at the back of the home. \u201cThe old garage that was there blocked the view\u0026nbsp;of the beautiful back \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.styleathome.com\/outdoor-living\/backyardsgardens\/article\/three-pretty-gardens-you-ll-want-to-recreate-in-your-own-backyard\u0022\u003Egarden\u003C\/a\u003E,\u201d says Ryan. \u201cSo replacing it\u0026nbsp;with a family room that includes a wall of windows and sliding doors helped bring the outdoors in.\u201d In addition, it flooded the space with light and allowed for a large open-concept kitchen.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EIn the rest of the house, original architectural elements like wainscotting, hardwood flooring, leaded glass windows and a stone fireplace were restored to underscore the home\u2019s character and charm. \u201cThen we struck a balance by bringing in furnishings that have a\u0026nbsp;bit more of a modern look\u0026nbsp;but still work with those historic lines,\u201d says Ryan. The\u0026nbsp;resulting vibe is sophisticated yet comfortable, clean-lined yet warm.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EPainting the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.styleathome.com\/decorating-design\/colour\/mediagallery\/our-favourite-white-spaces-homes-enveloped-in-white\u0022\u003Eenvelope a crisp white\u003C\/a\u003E offered a bright backdrop for a cohesive mix of neutral elements with hits of warm brass and cool blues. \u201cBlue is a favourite colour for both of the owners,\u201d says Ryan. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want this to come across as a blue house, so we injected small doses of the hue here and there.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAfter returning to Canada and moving into the house four years ago, the owners continued making it their own, keeping family life top of mind. \u201cWe don\u2019t have white sofas, and we don\u2019t have upholstered dining room chairs,\u201d says one of them. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want precious spaces that were off limits to kids. But I didn\u2019t want to have a place that was schlumpy or dumpy. I wanted something classic and chic yet extremely comfortable.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EWhen working with clients, the Formwerks team prides itself on truly listening to the homeowners\u2019 wants and needs. So when it came to designing Jim\u2019s own\u0026nbsp;cottage, which he shares with his wife, Jenna, their five grown children and their beloved Yorkshire terrier, Chloe, he was cognizant of listening to himself. \u201cI had to project myself onto a screen, so to speak,\u201d Jim says. What he saw was inspiration from the past, present and future: spending childhood days at his parents\u2019 cottage in Ontario; enjoying time with his Keats Island neighbours (when this lot came on the market, he was specially invited to join the close-knit enclave of six properties); and creating a place for hosting business get-togethers, as well as relaxing with a good book. \u201cIf you compile notions of past experiences and future desires, you get a backdrop you can respond to,\u201d he says.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EIt\u2019s a creative process that, after six months of construction, resulted in a modern 1,200-square-foot structure that\u2019s striking \u2013 obviously the home of an architect \u2013 but simple and not overbearing. \u201cI didn\u2019t want it to be an example of cold austere modern architecture.
